    UNDP-ELECT II Commits to Support the 2014 and 2015 Elections

    Women Jewelers in the Making in Rural Herat

    Herat: Rural women in Herat in the western edge of Afghanistan will soon find new skills in jewelry design and production can open new vistas for greater income in their hands.     UNDP Hosts National Dialogue on the Rights of Street Vendors

    12 July, Kabul- What do money changers, vegetable sellers, small food cart pushers, shoe shiners, itinerant fix-it technicians, roadside hairdressers and mobile food caterers in Kabul all have in common? They are all considered “street vendors” and are a part of the informal economy. These are people who earn their living by buying, selling and trading goods and services without involvement and support from the government.

    Netherlands Supports Justice and Human Rights with $2.5M

    The Embassy of the Netherlands and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan have signed a cost sharing agreement (CSA) to enhance policy development and increase access to justice services across Afghanistan. The US$ 2.49 million cost-sharing agreement covers UNDP activities until December 2015, carried out under the Justice and Human Rights in Afghanistan (JHRA) Project.

    Addressing the Working Conditions of Street Vendors

    Ali Yawar, 53, is a street vendor from Kabul. He was a young boy of 18 when he lost his arm during the war in 1990s. Since then, Ali’s physical disability has prevented him from earning a descent income in order to support his family. In the absence of a secure job, Ali has been deprived the joy of a stable income which would usher in peace and security for his family.

    Afghanistan Celebrates World Press Freedom Day

    Today UNESCO, UNDP, Afghanistan Ministry of Information and Culture and Afghanistan Journalists Federation jointly celebrated the World Press Freedom Day under the global theme “Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media”. The Afghan observance came three days after the event was launched on 3 May at a ceremony held in San Jose, Costa Rica to mark the global launch.

    Spanish Funding for Development of Rural Areas in Badghis Province

    Spain has provided Euro 22 million for Development of Rural Areas in Badghis Province in Afghanistan under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-supported National Area Based Development Programme (NABDP). An agreement to this effect was signed between the Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Spanish Government and UNDP Afghanistan.

    UNDP, EU help Afghan National Police scale up code of conduct

    UNDP Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan (UNDP-LOTFA) and Ministry of Interior (MoI) ran a Training of Trainers (ToT) Workshop from 31st March to 2nd April, 2013 at the Ministry of Interior Headquarters in Kabul to train 17 Police Training Officers from all Kabul Police Districts on the Afghan Police Code of Conduct.

UNDP Afghanistan 2013 Annual Report

During 2013, UNDP Afghanistan remained committed to maintaining a close working relationship with Afghanistan’s government and people. It reorganised its work around the areas of inclusive and legitimate politics; sub-national governance and development; rule of law; and the cross-cutting areas of gender, capacity development, and poverty and the environment. In this context, projects were implemented and results achieved in the areas of peacebuilding, rule of law, democratic governance, poverty reduction and livelihoods, and managing resources for sustainability and resilience.
