International Mother Earth Day 2016 Celebration in Bagh-e-Babur

On the International Mother Earth Day, UNDP/GEF's Small Grants Programme and ‪EWA‬ presented “Champion of Earth” awards to successful UNDP-supported environmentalists at a packed ceremony in Bagh-e-Babur. Rural Green Environment Organization - RGEO won the first award for reforesting a mountain in Tagab district of northeastern ‪‎Badakhshan‬ province that saved rare animals and plants and created livelihoods opportunities for thousands of locals. ‪Photo: UNDP Afghanistan / Abdul Tawab Sadaat / 2016

On April 23, UNDP in partnership with Environment Watch Afghanistan celebrated the Mother Earth Day at the Queen’s Palace, Bagh-e-Babur. Douglas Keh, UNDP Afghanistan Country Director; Prince Mustafa Zahir, Director of National Environmental Protection Agency, other senior officials from the government and and impressive number of civil society representatives attended the event.

Five environment actors including the Equator Prize winner Rural Green Environment Organization were presented with Champion of the Earth awards in this ceremony. Also, more than 10 environment initiatives had the chance to showcase their environment innovations as part of the celebration.
