    Herat: Rural women in Herat in the western edge of Afghanistan will soon find new skills in jewelry design and production can open new vistas for greater income in their hands. With support of the UNDP Gender Equality Project and under the aegis of the Department of Women’s Affairs (DoWA), 20 women from six villages of Enjil District are poised to try their hand at jewelry production.

They are all considered “street vendors” and are a part of the informal economy. These are people who earn their living by buying, selling and trading goods and services without involvement and support from the government.

    The Embassy of the Netherlands and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan have signed a cost sharing agreement (CSA) to enhance policy development and increase access to justice services across Afghanistan. The US$ 2.49 million cost-sharing agreement covers UNDP activities until December 2015, carried out under the Justice and Human Rights in Afghanistan (JHRA) Project.
