UNDP Supports Gender Training of 35 Faculty Members of Kabul UniversitySep 17, 2013
Kabul: The Ministry of Women’s Affairs with assistance from United Nations Development Program’s Gender Equality Project started a training program today for 35 members of Kabul University Faculty, representing almost all the departments of Kabul University including Law and Diplomacy, Language Literature, Journalism, Agriculture, Computer Science, Engineering, Fine Arts, Islamic Studies, Geo Science, Pharmacy, Psychology, Physical Science and Social Science. The two-day workshop is designed to reinforce the capacity of the faculty members for a holistic understanding of gender issues. Topics such as national and international gender commitments, gender-based violence, gender analysis, and gender equity versus equality are expected to be covered during the workshop.
Speaking at the Opening of the Workshop, the Vice Chancellor of Kabul University, Ms. Raihana Popalzai, said, “The University is striving to make every effort toward bringing a gender balance at the workplace as well as enhancing the capacity of students in such studies. We want all the professors present here to not only actively participate in the programme, but also help spread their learning in their class sessions”. Ms. Fawzia Habibi, Deputy Minister of MoWA emphasized on the role of professors in MoWA’s mandate of public education regarding gender values. “We need the help of educators of this country: the ministry of higher education and specifically the professors to take active part in promoting such values. We believe that development of Afghanistan is inevitable without equal participation of men and women” said Ms. Habibi.
Ms. Fulya Vekiloglu, Project Manager for UNDP Gender Equality Project explained the critical importance of having a Gender Studies Institute at Kabul University.. “We have taken several initiatives including training programmes for students, faculty and leadership. Once we develop the ability of running a fully functional institute specific to gender studies in Kabul University, we can be confident of bringing policy reforms in favor of gender equality as well as equal participation in the government”, she added.
“We are grateful to MoWA, UNDP as well as MoHE for providing the opportunity for professors of almost all faculties to come together and learn values relating to gender equality. I am looking forward to having a better understanding of gender in the context of Afghanistan that can help us solve gender based discriminations at work place as well as in the society” said Ms. Jaweda Ahmadi, a participant professor of Journalism department.
