    UNDP Hosts National Dialogue on the Rights of Street Vendors

    12 July, Kabul- What do money changers, vegetable sellers, small food cart pushers, shoe shiners, itinerant fix-it technicians, roadside hairdressers and mobile food caterers in Kabul all have in common? They are all considered “street vendors” and are a part of the informal economy. These are people who earn their living by buying, selling and trading goods and services without involvement and support from the government.

    Netherlands Supports Justice and Human Rights with $2.5M

    The Embassy of the Netherlands and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan have signed a cost sharing agreement (CSA) to enhance policy development and increase access to justice services across Afghanistan. The US$ 2.49 million cost-sharing agreement covers UNDP activities until December 2015, carried out under the Justice and Human Rights in Afghanistan (JHRA) Project.

    Natural Disaster Risk Reduction Theme of World Environment Day

    Afghanistan Celebrates World Press Freedom Day

    Today UNESCO, UNDP, Afghanistan Ministry of Information and Culture and Afghanistan Journalists Federation jointly celebrated the World Press Freedom Day under the global theme “Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media”. The Afghan observance came three days after the event was launched on 3 May at a ceremony held in San Jose, Costa Rica to mark the global launch.

    Spanish Funding for Development of Rural Areas in Badghis Province

    Spain has provided Euro 22 million for Development of Rural Areas in Badghis Province in Afghanistan under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-supported National Area Based Development Programme (NABDP). An agreement to this effect was signed between the Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Spanish Government and UNDP Afghanistan.

    24 Provinces Participate in UNDP-Supported Strategic Planning Initiative

    In a move that links a majority of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces to the framework of strategic development planning, the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) has rolled out a three-day training workshop that will further consolidate the way forward for a harmonized, single planning system for the Government of Afghanistan. The initiative, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will help IDLG in rolling out Provincial Strategic Plans (PSPs) in ten provinces during 2013.

    USD 20 Million New Japanese Funding For Livelihoods Generation in Rural Afghanistan

    The Government of Japan will provide an additional USD 20 million for the implementation of livelihoods-support projects in Afghanistan under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-supported National Area Based Development Programme (NABDP). An agreement to this effect was signed in the presence of the Minister H.E. Mr. Wais Ahmad Barmak, Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD), by the Japanese Ambassador to Afghanistan, H.E. Mr. Hiroshi Takahashi, and the UNDP Country Director for Afghanistan, Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez.

    Korea Gives $50M Support to Law and Order Trust Fund

    The Government of the Republic of Korea will make a contribution of USD 50 million to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-supported Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan (LOTFA). An Agreement to this effect was signed by the Korean Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mr. Seong-doo Ahn and Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez, UNDP Country Director for Afghanistan in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Interior, Mr. Ghulam Ali Wahadat, here today.

    50 Afghan Police Officers to Receive Training in Indonesia

    Major Bahaudin from the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and three team leaders Major Mohammad Farouk, Captain Farhad and Colonel Mohammad Noor left for Indonesia last week to attend a training course on traffic and community policing, as well as criminal investigation. They are among 50 police officers from various provinces of Afghanistan who will attend the training of the Afghan police by POLRI, the Indonesia National Police. The training is supported by the UNDP-managed Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan (LOTFA).

    $2.2M GEF Initiative to Promote Community Action

    The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme that is designed to bring benefits of community-based environmental management to Afghanistan was launched here today. An event to mark the occasion was organized at the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA), the designated Government agency for protection of environment.     600 Indian Scholarships Boost Agricultural and Civil Service Reform

    Agricultural research and development is expected to receive a major boost in Afghanistan with the formalization of an agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) and the Government of India that will allow Afghan students to avail of over 600 scholarships to Universities in India over the next five years. The scholarships will be granted for Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. programs in the fields of Agriculture, Civil Service and Forestry.
