    USD 20 Million New Japanese Funding For Livelihoods Generation in Rural Afghanistan

    The Government of Japan will provide an additional USD 20 million for the implementation of livelihoods-support projects in Afghanistan under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-supported National Area Based Development Programme (NABDP). An agreement to this effect was signed in the presence of the Minister H.E. Mr. Wais Ahmad Barmak, Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD), by the Japanese Ambassador to Afghanistan, H.E. Mr. Hiroshi Takahashi, and the UNDP Country Director for Afghanistan, Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez.

    Korea Gives $50M Support to Law and Order Trust Fund

    The Government of the Republic of Korea will make a contribution of USD 50 million to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-supported Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan (LOTFA). An Agreement to this effect was signed by the Korean Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mr. Seong-doo Ahn and Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez, UNDP Country Director for Afghanistan in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Interior, Mr. Ghulam Ali Wahadat, here today.

    50 Afghan Police Officers to Receive Training in Indonesia

    Major Bahaudin from the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and three team leaders Major Mohammad Farouk, Captain Farhad and Colonel Mohammad Noor left for Indonesia last week to attend a training course on traffic and community policing, as well as criminal investigation. They are among 50 police officers from various provinces of Afghanistan who will attend the training of the Afghan police by POLRI, the Indonesia National Police. The training is supported by the UNDP-managed Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan (LOTFA).

    $2.2M GEF Initiative to Promote Community Action

    The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme that is designed to bring benefits of community-based environmental management to Afghanistan was launched here today. An event to mark the occasion was organized at the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA), the designated Government agency for protection of environment. The programme will promote capacity development for community-based conservation efforts, youth participation and livelihoods generation at the local level.

    600 Indian Scholarships Boost Agricultural and Civil Service Reform

    Agricultural research and development is expected to receive a major boost in Afghanistan with the formalization of an agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) and the Government of India that will allow Afghan students to avail of over 600 scholarships to Universities in India over the next five years. The scholarships will be granted for Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. programs in the fields of Agriculture, Civil Service and Forestry.

    New Multi-Million Dollar UNDP - Japanese Partnership Strengthens Afghan Democracy in Nine Provinces

    Four million Afghan voters and nine provinces can look forward to more effective elections and a more responsive democracy following a US$8.6 million agreement signed today between H.E. Reiichiro Takahashi, the Ambassador of Japan and Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez, the Country Director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), in the presence of the chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), H.E. Fazal Ahmed Manawi.
