UNDP Afghanistan is making adjustments to its country programme so it can reposition itself as the SDG integrator in Afghanistan and become the knowledge hub supporting Afghanistan’s transition from a war economy to a peace economy.

The news about the new adjustments and arrangements was shared with UNDP staff in a letter from UNDP Afghanistan Resident Representative Mr. Abdallah Al Dardari on September 1, 2019. The letter from Mr. Dardari referred to the comprehensive consultations with staff and relevant partners, where the existing and pipeline projects of UNDP Afghanistan were clustered around the following UNDP signature solutions: Poverty, Gender, Energy, Environment, Peace Justice and Security.

Based on the mentioned signature solutions and the extensive consultations, UNDP Afghanistan is reorganizing its portfolio into four new programmatic pillars – which are:

  • Inclusive Economic Transformation Pillar;
  • Social Protection Pillar;
  • Governance for Peace Pillar;
  • and Energy and Environment Pillar.

The new Programme Pillars will be guided by an SDG country support platform that is currently under development.

The letter from Mr. Al Dardari, requested the full extended cooperation and support from all staff and assured that during this transition process, there will be further consultations to identify leadership opportunities for young and national staff, focusing on women’s empowerment.

This transitional process and repositioning of UNDP country programme as the SDG integrator for Afghanistan is in line with Article 6, paragraph 32 of the UN General Assembly Resolution 72/279.
